What is the Hades Cabin?
The Hades Cabin (Cabin 13) is the designated residence for the demigod children of Hades, the Greek god of the Underworld and the dead. For decades, Cabin 13 Percy Jackson did not exist at Camp Half-Blood. Because Hades was largely ostracized by the other Olympian gods and rarely had demigod children due to the pact of the Big Three, he was not granted a cabin at the camp.
This changed fundamentally after the Second Titan War. Percy Jackson used his reward from the gods to enforce a new rule: all gods, including Hades and the minor deities, must be recognized and given their own cabins at camp. Thus, Cabin 13 was constructed, symbolizing a new era of inclusion and a long-overdue respect for the Lord of the Underworld.
Architecture and Interior Design
The Hades Cabin Percy Jackson is arguably the most intimidating structure at Camp Half-Blood. It was designed to reflect the gloomy, majestic, and terrifying aesthetic of the Underworld. The exterior walls are constructed entirely of solid, polished black obsidian, which absorbs the sunlight rather than reflecting it. Heavy, dark columns support the porch, giving it the appearance of a miniature, windowless mausoleum.
Above the door sits a stylized skull, and the entrance is flanked by heavy bronze braziers that burn with eerie, glowing green Greek fire. The fire provides light but produces no heat, adding to the cabin’s supernatural atmosphere.
Inside, the cabin continues the funereal theme. The walls are lined with dark beds that resemble coffins, complete with blood-red velvet canopies and silver trim. The air inside is perpetually frigid, carrying the faint, metallic scent of deep earth and old stones. Despite its morbid decor, the interior is surprisingly quiet and peaceful, offering a sanctuary of silence amidst the bustling camp.
Notable Residents
Because of the pact of the Big Three (Zeus, Poseidon, and Hades) not to sire any more demigod children after World War II, the Hades cabin is virtually empty, housing only those born before the pact or under unique circumstances.
Nico di Angelo
Nico di Angelo, known as the Ghost King, is the primary and essentially sole resident of Cabin 13. Born in the 1930s before the Big Three pact, Nico and his sister Bianca were kept frozen in time in the Lotus Hotel and Casino for decades. After Bianca’s tragic death, Nico struggled with his identity, his fatal flaw of holding grudges, and his place in the world. He eventually became a crucial hero in both the Titan and Giant wars, acting as an ambassador to the Underworld.
Hazel Levesque
While not technically a Greek child of Hades, Hazel Levesque is a daughter of Pluto, Hades’s Roman aspect. Originally from Camp Jupiter, Hazel occasionally visits Camp Half-Blood. When she does, she resides in Cabin 13. Her presence brings a slightly warmer, more gem-focused energy to the gloomy cabin, reflecting Pluto’s domain over the earth’s riches.
Powers and Traits
The children of Hades are among the most powerful and feared demigods in the Percy Jackson universe. Their abilities are deeply tied to the Underworld, death, and the earth.
- Necromancy: Hades demigods can summon and command the dead. They can raise skeletal warriors, communicate with ghosts, and sense when someone is dying or has died.
- Umbrakinesis (Shadow Travel): They have absolute control over darkness and shadows. They can blend into the shadows to become invisible, manipulate shadows into physical barriers, and most notably, “shadow-travel”—teleporting across vast distances by stepping into one shadow and emerging from another.
- Geokinesis and Osteokinesis: They possess the ability to manipulate the earth, causing tremors or opening fissures that drop straight into the Underworld. They can also manipulate precious gems and metals (more common in Pluto’s children like Hazel) and control bones.
- Aura of Fear: They naturally exude a cold, intimidating aura that can make mortals and other demigods incredibly uneasy.
History and Key Events
The construction of Cabin 13 marked a massive shift in camp politics. Prior to its existence, Nico di Angelo was forced to sleep in the Hermes Cabin (Cabin 11) alongside other unclaimed or minor demigods, which only deepened his feelings of isolation and resentment.
The creation of the Hades cabin after the Battle of Manhattan was a symbolic victory for Nico and his father, cementing their rightful place among the Olympians. During the events of the Heroes of Olympus series, Cabin 13 stood mostly empty while Nico was traveling the world and suffering in Tartarus. However, it remains a powerful symbol. It represents the breaking of old prejudices, ensuring that the children of the Underworld will never again be cast aside or forgotten by Camp Half-Blood.
